Cranford is quite an unusual book. Having read North and South and Wives and Daughters, this novel (if you can call it one) took me by begin with, it has no proper plot or structure.

It is rather a written collection of lives, customs and social values of people of a fictitious town called "Cranford" which is modelled after the small Cheshire town of Knutsford/5. Very much a woman's book, Mary recounts the story of her visits to her spinster friend Miss Matty, who lives in the little town of Cranford.

As the book unfolds we learn of her past love, her long-lost brother, and the concerns and foibles of her middle-aged woman friends which include a surprise marriage to a tradesman and a burglary scare/5().

Cranford is full of great characters - many highly eccentric - all struggling to maintain the standard of gentility of a by-gone year, without the means to do so. The lengths to which they go to preserve the veneer of prosperity and their 'place' in Cranford society provides much of the humour of the book which is superbly read by Prunella by: 4.

The Cranford Chronicles consists of three short stories: Mr Harrison's Confessions (the shortest) Cranford My Lady Ludlow They are all separate stories but set in the same sort of place - mainly a small northern town where the population happens to be many unmarried women who all seem half afraid of getting married or desperate to.4/5.

Most of the three-colour blocks used in this book have been made by the Graphic Photo-Engraving Co., London p. 1 CHAPTER I—OUR SOCIETY. In the first place, Cranford is in possession of the Amazons; all the holders of houses above a certain rent are women.

If a married couple come to settle in the town, somehow the gentleman disappears; he is either fairly frightened to death by being the. Cranford started out not as a novel, but as a series of related stories published in Household Words, a magazine published by Charles ed as a book, Cranford lacks a cohesive plot but is filled with a few memorably funny moments (the tale of the cat and the lace collar springs immediately to mind) and a lovely scene that shows the power of female friendship.

A lovely book, describing the lives of the ladies of Cranford. Admittedly not a great deal happens to them for much of the book - but that doesn't matter; in fact I think it's part of the point. Cranford is full of wit, and this audio version is read very well by Nadia May, who brings out the humour in her narration.

A very interesting read to myself as I was born at Cranford Lodge, Knutsford, the true market town in the north of England that Gaskell based her novel by: 4. About Cranford. Now a Masterpiece Theater production starring Dame Judy Dench, Elizabeth Gaskell’s portrait of kindness, compassion, and hope Cranford depicts the lives and preoccupations of the inhabitants of a small village – their petty snobberies, appetite for gossip, and loyal support for each other in times of need This is a community that runs on cooperation and gossip, at the very.
